Day of Unplugging

What does it mean to unplug? When I hear unplug, I think of removing an appliance cord from the wall. The description just mentioned can be applied to many facets of our lives today because of the explosion of technology and how we interact with that technology in our daily lives. There was a time when unplugging our phone meant disconnecting it from the wall, but today it just means turning our phone off. If we did not want to be bothered we just unplugged and went about what we were doing. Those days were much simpler and people tended not to bring their work home with them. Well people, we are in a new world, a world where many people take work home.

How are we to unplug when there is no refuge for us to retreat to? If we unplug we risk missing that important message from work, or we are not up to date with what is happening in the world through social media. It is no secret that we are increasingly connected to the world around us. Smartphones, tablets, WiFi access and the internet have enabled us to be connected to the entire world 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every single day of the year. Being unplugged is when you cut yourself free of all the devices in your life that hold your attention. Usually associated with work, these devices now hold the attention of peoples whether it be through social media or other fun apps on the market.

On the flip side, being a business owner you are taking a risk when you unplug from the aforementioned devices. It is one of the best reasons for understanding why consumer analytics can help your company create value in the eyes of potential customers. They want to feel connected to you and your business; so be selective when you unplug and be sure to have someone step into your role to keep the doors open for your customers when you are in need of time off.  The bottom line is whether you're a global brand or the shop around the corner, the shift from the brick and mortar model to  the shift to mobile marketing, the customers' behavior for finding you has changed the marketing dynamic, so don't be caught by not being plugged in. In other words make sure you are mobile optimized to connect with  a larger consumer audience.
